Let's Begin...

It was difficult to see through the murky shadows of the dungeon where the once-noble Arryn of Wetherby was chained, but he could swear he saw something approaching...

Arryn had at first mistaken it for nothing more than fog, one of the common storms that blanketed the region as Winter grudingly gave itself over to Spring, that had crept it's way in the old and drafty dungeon. Now though, as he peered out the small hole in the door of his cell -- for what else had there been for him to do but stare and suffer -- he realised a shape was coalescing. A robed and hooded figure was striding purposefully toward him...

Silence, but for the odd pitter-patting of murky water dripping as it found it's escape after seeping through the old stone walls. The figure drew ever nearer.
Dark shadows rippled, pooling in darkness around the floor, at the feet of whatever was approaching. It was as though it drew from the darkest crevices of the musty dungeon, pulling it into itself as the eerie bright mist merged with the shade.

Try as he could, Arryn could not make out the face; the flikers of the torch lights reveleaed only glimpses of a dark and brooding mass approaching him like the slow certitude of death.

"Oh Arryn. Dearest Arryn of Weathrby, you know now that your fate awaits you. You know what time it is."

Arryn heard these words, and though he wished not to hear them, he could not escape their meaning as it sunk deep into his cold damp bones. He knew the weight of them and he scowled and turned his head as if to rid himself of the truth -the horrible awfull truth that those words would preceded.

"Get up Arryn. The time has come Arryn. Face it like a man. Face it like that noble knight you once were."
But Arryn did not rise and instead turned away from the hooded figure that now beckoned him. Weather to hide the tears that he tried in vain to hold back, or to show his back as a final testement of his disrepect to the dark crown that now imprisoned him Arryn could not say for sure. He only knew that whatever the reason it came out of a weakness that his imprisonment had fostered in him. He was not proud of it, but he accepted it, just as he would soon come to accept his inevitable fate.

My liege...

His thoughts echoed in futility through the hollow reaches of his mind, his resignation a reflection of the acerbic bitterness that threatened to dissolve his once stalwart virtue in its corrosive bile.

You would brand me a traitor? Ha! Don't make me laugh.

Arryn cracked a wry smile and chuckled slightly. The sound escaping his throat was raspy and unnatural, the agonised laughter of a man whose body was as battered as his spirit was broken. His lengthy imprisonment had left him weakened, the torture a sadistic and brutal exercise - but no prison of stone and bars could compare to that which bound his thoughts.

You whose commands I followed with such faith, without question. Yet in the face of such crass and self-serving deceit...

The former knight stole a cursory glance at the robed figure waiting patiently outside his cell, as though hoping against all hope it were simply an illusion. The figure spoke again, his stern, commanding voice cutting a swathe through the silence.

"Come, Arryn. My patience is not limitless. Out of respect for the knight who once served our nation so proudly, I shall give you the opportunity to retain your dignity. If you do not respond then you shall be forcibly escorted to the premises by an armed guard. If you have the audacity to act as you have, then do not insult us further! Have the courage to face your crimes!"

Arryn lifted his head, staring intently at the intrusive presence. Veiled in darkness, an impassive silhouette; he could make out no details.

Courage, you say? What does that courage avail me now? Truly... He let out an exhausted sigh. There is nothing so absurd as a knight.

"Fine." The response was quiet, distant. "I'll come."

Suddenly, the figure shifted. The slight rustling of fabric could be heard, as the figure breathed slowly, hesitantly. The voice came again, though the tone that followed was not one of sternness, but almost sympathetic.

"Arryn, I--"

The pathetic figure of Arryn was visibly shaken, the sudden change in demeanour more piercing than any crossbow bolt.

"Don't. Just... just don't."

The sorrowful knight's voice wavered slightly as he spoke in desperation. A solitary tear streamed its way down his face, betraying his otherwise impassive fa├žade. He could accept his deeds. Arryn the Criminal. Arryn the Murderer. But for the man who had risked his life, the man who saw the fires of Hell in service of king and country, the truth was too painful to bear.
